Fun Places to Go Near Boston
The Boston area has many fun and interesting places to visit. Here are a few that we know about. All are family-friendly and free.
Common Boston 2016 Festival.
Weekend festival featuring open houses at dozens of architecturally intersting Boston-area sites, some not generally open to the public. All are free. Venues include Old North Church, Waterworks Museum, Nichols House, BPL, Ayer Mansion and Dorchester historic houses. Details at Common Boston web site.
FREE FUN FRIDAYS.
The Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Fridays program sponsors free admission to six different cultural institutions every summer Friday from June 26 through August 31. Located thoughout Massachusetts, the venues include the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Plimouth Plantation, JFK Library, and the Boston Children’s Museum.
BPL COURTYARD CONCERTS.
One of Boston’s hidden gems is the open-air courtyard at the Boston Public Library’s Copley Square branch. From June 1 through August 31 it comes alive with Concerts in the Courtyard Wednesday evenings at 6:00 and Fridays at 12:30. Musical styles include African, Brazilian, classical and jazz.
SHAKESPEARE ON THE COMMON.
This year’s production is Love’s Labour’s Lost. Runs from July 20 through August 7. Most performances start at 7 or 8 p.m., but there is a matinee on August 6.
FREE MOVIES UNDER THE STARS.
Watch free movies every Friday evening at the Esplanade’s Hatch Shell. Films begin at sundown JuneĀ 24 through August 28. Free Friday Flicks.
BOSTON LANDMARKS ORCHESTRA.
Outdoor classical concerts on the Esplanade Hatch Shell Wednesday evenings at 7:00 from July 13 through August 31. Free concerts at other venues throughout the summer.
BERKLEE SUMMER IN THE CITY.
More than 200 concerts, mostly free, in Boston and surrounding communities by students from the Berklee College of Music.
BOSTON HARBOR HOTEL SUMMER IN THE CITY ENTERTAINMENT SERIES.
Four nights a week, Tuesday through Friday, music and movies (Friday). Outdoor at the hotel’s harborside location. Click for PDF schedule.
